In reply to your letters of the 19th, and 24th. instant I amdirected to offer you the appointment of Assistant Crown Solicitor at a salary of $420 to 540 by 240 tri- ennially, subject to the general orders and regulations of the Hongkong Government and of the Colonial Office.

2. I take this opportunity of informing you that the Secretary of State for the Colonies has ruled that the post of Crown Solicitor should as a general rule be filled from the Cadet Service, if fully qualified candidates are available, and that the amalgamation of the Land Office and the Official Receiver's Office with the Office of the Crown Solicitor is highly desirable, the Land Officer, Mr. Wakeman, ranking next in seniority to the Crown Solicitor and acting for him during his absence.
